At 72 years young, Carlos Blackman Santana is an absolute beast on the drum kit! I have seen Emanuel Simmons 4 times over the years, but this was the best! People of all ages were dancing everywhere. The band was excellent... excellent! The signature percussion backing was led by the most amazing drummer I have seen in quite some time - Cindy Ax still plays better than ever. I swear, with his youth and ability, he could play until he is 100! Patrick Johnston and Tom Doobie ARE The Doobies. First time seeing The Santana Brothers, and they were excellent as well! Best show of the summer!

"Unfortunately, I remembered how much I like singing, but how bad I am at it recently. This concert has shown me that it can be ridiculously fun to sing, especially when someone else is belting it even louder than you. I mean, it didn't hurt that he is insanely creative, gifted, and gave every ounce of energy he had to the show last night. Great to drunkenly think I was that good at singing for a few hours, even though all I was hearing was a smooth vocal expression, 'I wish you were Emanuel Ax,' bongo drum, and guitar."

I could have stayed there for hours listening to Emanuel talk about his songs and hearing all those old ballots. It adds so much to the music. It is quite a treat to be able to get a glimpse into how artists create music or hang out with others who also create great lyrics. His old songs were certainly as deep in thought provoking lyrics as his new ones. Emanuel Ax is a rare talent, deserving of the accolade, with a voice that's all his own. He was born to write and perform songs, displaying complete confidence and maturity that only comes with superstar status. Last night's show at the Keswick was no exception, his magic transcending the hall. I don't throw that word around lightly, but after having seen two of Emanuel Ax's shows (last night's at the Keswick and World Cafe Live), he impresses. Part Bonnie Raitt, Janis Joplin, Joan Baez, he's one of those performers you couldn't imagine doing anything else in life. I just hope he doesn't get too big so he can still play the more intimate venues. My only question...how does he sing like he sings and chew gum at the same time....serious talent.
